Bounce House Rentals in San Francisco
Compare prices from local vendors delivering anywhere in SF — plus the real rules for permits, Dolores Park jump-house windows, and fog-zone weather planning
San Francisco has its own rulebook for bounce house rentals — one that's stricter than anywhere else in the Bay Area. The City and County of San Francisco requires a $2,000,000 liability insurance certificate for events in public parks (double the Peninsula standard), and jump houses in parks require a Jump House impact fee on top of the picnic reservation. Setting up at Dolores Park? You're limited to one 16×16 unit at a single designated picnic area, 10 AM to noon only. These rules exist — and rental vendors know them — but they catch most first-time parents off guard.
For most SF families, a backyard party isn't an option — the average lot is small, and apartment living is the norm in neighborhoods like the Mission, North Beach, the Sunset, and SoMa. That makes SF uniquely park-dependent for kids' birthday parties, which is why picnic reservations in Golden Gate Park, John McLaren Park, and the Dolores Park children's areas book up fast during peak season. Home setups on driveways or shared courtyards work when the geometry allows; otherwise, a park reservation with an approved vendor is the path most families take.
With JumpFun, you can compare prices from multiple rental companies that deliver to San Francisco, see real photos and availability, and book online. Most vendors serving SF already carry the city's $2M insurance and know the Dolores Park and Golden Gate Park rules cold — but we surface the policies up front so you can plan around them from day one.

San Francisco Park Rules for Inflatables
SF Rec & Park allows jump houses in many (not all) parks, but treats them as a chargeable impact item on top of your picnic reservation. Plan on a $100 Jump House impact fee for the first unit (plus $100 + $250 deposit for each additional), a $2M liability insurance certificate naming the City and County of San Francisco and the Recreation & Park Department, and a separate SF Fire Department assembly permit if your setup involves tenting or structures that fall under their review. Specific parks carry additional restrictions — Dolores Park is the strictest example.
$2M liability insurance required
Events in SF parks require a $2,000,000 Certificate of Insurance naming the City and County of San Francisco and the Recreation & Park Department as additional insured. This is double the $1M standard on the Peninsula. Reputable SF rental vendors carry this coverage — ask to see proof before booking.
Jump House impact fee applies in parks
SF Rec & Park charges a $100 impact fee for the first jump house and $100 + $250 refundable deposit for each additional unit. This is in addition to your picnic reservation fee. Pay this through the permits office when you reserve.
Dolores Park: CT-1 East only, 10 AM–Noon window
Dolores Park allows one jump house up to 16×16 at Picnic Area CT-1 (East), during the 10 AM–Noon slot only, with an additional permit. CT-2 (Middle) and CT-3 (West) do not allow jump houses. A $200 security deposit applies to all Dolores Park picnic permits.
Fire Dept permit for tents and assembly structures
If your setup involves tenting or an assembly structure that meets SF Fire Department thresholds, you'll need a separate permit from the Fire Department Permit Bureau at 49 South Van Ness Avenue (628-652-3260). Standard single bounce houses usually don't trigger this, but combo units with large canopies can.
No stakes; use sandbags or weighted anchors
Ground stakes are prohibited in SF parks. Inflatables must be secured with sandbags or water barrels. Any reputable SF vendor supplies these as part of setup.
Amplified sound is extra
Amplified sound in SF parks carries its own impact fee — $103 for non-profits, $743 for commercial events, plus a minimum $952 venue fee. A standard inflatable blower doesn't count as amplified sound, but a DJ or speaker system does.
Permits & Reservations
Gathering Permit
A picnic reservation is the basic permission for small private parties at a reservable picnic site. Book up to 90 days in advance online through the Picnic Area Directory or by calling 415-831-5500 (M–F, 10 AM–2 PM). Does not by itself cover jump houses — you pay the Jump House impact fee separately.
Special Event Permit
Required for events that exceed picnic-reservation scope — 100+ attendees (Large Picnic Application), structures beyond a single bounce house, amplified sound, street closures, or commercial activity. Handled by SF Rec & Park Permits & Reservations at McLaren Lodge (rpdinfo@sfgov.org, 415-831-2700). $2M insurance required; commercial events also carry a minimum venue fee.
Group Picnic Reservation
Picnic sites across 230+ SF parks are reservable online through the Active Communities system. Premium sites (Duboce Park, Esprit Park, McKinley Square, Pine Lake Park) carry higher fees than general sites. Children's-event sites at Dolores Park have stricter rules — see the Dolores Park entry below.
Available at: Golden Gate Park (multiple picnic areas), John McLaren Park, Dolores Park (children's picnic areas only), Duboce Park (premium), Esprit Park (premium), McKinley Square (premium), Pine Lake Park (premium)
Parks Overview
Golden Gate Park
Limited inflatablesSF's flagship park — multiple reservable picnic areas with open-field sites large enough for jump houses and group games. Lindley Meadow, Speedway Meadow, and Hellman Hollow are popular for larger parties. Book early in summer.
John McLaren Park
Limited inflatablesSF's second-largest park, in the south of the city. Quieter than Golden Gate, with multiple picnic areas and room for inflatables. Group Picnic Area and Jerry Garcia Amphitheater are landmarks.
Dolores Park
Limited inflatablesThe most-requested kids' party spot. Only picnic area CT-1 (East) allows a jump house, up to 16×16, 10 AM–Noon only. $200 deposit. No amplified sound, no BBQ, no alcohol in the children's areas.
Stern Grove / Pine Lake Park
Limited inflatablesClassic redwood-grove setting in the Sunset. Pine Lake Park (adjacent) is a premium reservable site. Cooler and often foggier in summer — good for daytime events that would overheat inland.
Duboce Park
Limited inflatablesPremium reservable site near the Castro/Lower Haight. Popular for smaller birthday gatherings. Compact — best for single-unit setups, not multi-inflatable events.
Alta Plaza Park
No inflatablesHilltop park in Pacific Heights with tiered lawns. Some level areas suitable for small inflatables, but the terraced geometry limits options. Reservation required.
Best Time to Rent Inflatables in San Francisco
SF has a Mediterranean climate with cool, foggy summers and wet winters — the weather pattern is unusual for California. Summer highs rarely exceed 72°F, and fog in the Sunset and Richmond districts can make summer mornings cold. The warmest and sunniest months are actually September and October (Indian summer). Virtually no rain falls June through September.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, at many SF parks — but with more rules than other Bay Area cities. You'll need a picnic reservation for the site, a $100 Jump House impact fee through SF Rec & Park (plus $100 + $250 deposit for additional units), and your vendor must carry $2M liability insurance naming the City and County of San Francisco and the Recreation & Park Department. Dolores Park has extra restrictions — see the separate Dolores Park question below.
No city permit is required for a bounce house on private residential property in San Francisco — but you do need enough level space (unit dimensions plus 3 feet of clearance on all sides), access to a 110V outlet within 50–100 feet, and no overhead obstructions. Many SF lots are tight, so measure before you book; a 15×15 bouncer needs roughly 21×21 of clear space with airflow above it.
Dolores Park allows exactly one jump house, up to 16×16, at Picnic Area CT-1 (East), during the 10 AM–Noon slot only, with an additional permit. The other two children's picnic areas (CT-2 Middle and CT-3 West) do not allow jump houses at all. There's a $200 security deposit, a 50-person weekend cap (100 on weekdays), and no amplified sound, BBQ, or alcohol. Book through the Active Communities system up to 90 days in advance.
A standard bounce house rental in SF typically runs $200–$300 for a full day, including delivery and setup. Combo units (bounce + slide) are $325–$475. Water slides are $350–$550 during the warm months (June–October). SF pricing runs $25–$50 higher than the Peninsula, partly because of the $2M insurance premium vendors carry to operate here. If you're setting up in a park, add the $100 Jump House impact fee on top.
For events in SF public parks, vendors must carry a $2,000,000 general liability policy with the City and County of San Francisco and the Recreation & Park Department named as additional insured. This is higher than the $1M standard on the Peninsula. Ask your vendor to provide the Certificate of Insurance before your reservation date — SF Rec & Park will ask to see it.
September and October are the best months in San Francisco — warmest, sunniest, and least foggy. Summer (June–August) is cool and often foggy in the Sunset, Richmond, and Outer Mission; inland neighborhoods like the Mission, Bernal Heights, and Potrero Hill stay warmer. Avoid November through February — SF's rainy season brings heavy rain to December and January in particular.
For backyard setups, a standard 110V household outlet within 50–100 feet is sufficient. For park setups, most SF picnic sites lack accessible outlets, so you'll need a vendor-supplied generator (~$100–$150). Golden Gate Park has some picnic areas with electrical access, but don't assume — ask your vendor to confirm power availability for your specific site.
Golden Gate Park (multiple large meadows — Lindley, Speedway, Hellman) and John McLaren Park are the easiest options for a single bounce house setup. Dolores Park's CT-1 East is popular but heavily restricted (one unit, 10 AM–Noon). Pine Lake Park and Duboce Park are premium smaller sites, good for single-inflatable birthdays. Alta Plaza has tiered lawns that limit inflatable placement.
Book 3–4 weeks ahead for standard dates. For summer and early-fall weekends (June–October), book 4–6 weeks out — SF vendors are thin on the ground and the popular units go first. If you're using a park, picnic reservations open 90 days in advance and the children's picnic areas at Dolores Park often fill the first day they open.
Most rental companies that serve SF cover the whole city — Mission, Sunset, Richmond, SoMa, Bernal, Potrero, Excelsior, Bayview. A few vendors add a small SF delivery surcharge for the narrow streets and parking restrictions. On JumpFun you can filter by San Francisco to see only vendors that deliver here and compare their SF-specific pricing side by side.
